Who Here Likes Glass?

Hi everyone! Sorry for the long delay in posts, but to answer the question above, I do. I love glass! I actually thought about becoming a glassblower when I was little-okay I’m getting off topic let’s just cut to the chase. We are going to learn how to make glass in Maya.

WARNING: you will become frustrated, and/or spend a while on this one.

OTHER WARNING: prepare to hear a bunch of words that I don’t use often.

Okay here we go! Now, you can make anything into glass, so for this one, you can make any object you desire that you will be turning into glass. Make sure that the texture you use is called “Phong”, and the color of the object is black. Now, here is where it gets tricky; you need to mess with the transparency. The transparency color(right below the color of the object that you picked) should be white. The ambient color and incandescence is going to be okay where it is, so don’t mess with it(aren’t you glad you don’t have to hunt for those? I was when making my halo).

So, what you need to do next is mess with the diffuse and translucence. These would be under the color choice as well(just like the transparency and incandescence part). Put both the diffuse and the translucence to ‘0.00’. The translucence focus should stay at the default of ‘0.500’.

Now, you need to sign a cosine power(this is all in the same tab that you guys have been in). The cosine power should be at ‘50.00’, with the specular color at default(gray). The reflectivity, and reflected color should also stay at default. Keep the refractions on, and make sure that the refraction limit is at ‘6’, and the other refraction limit is at ‘1’(yes there are two, and they are right next to each other so it’s okay).

Everything else is at default!

So, wasn’t that just fun? My answer: I spend two hours figuring this out even after my professor taught us. If you do not get it at first, it’s okay. This is a very advance thing to do in Maya, and it will take a while for someone to completely get this down pat.

I will upload my halo picture right after this to show you what it should look like.

Have a great day everyone!
